Our features writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana tells us about her stay at this charming hotel, located on Durban’s popular Florida Road. Here’s what she thought of The Benjamin Hotel.
First Impressions
I’ve always been intrigued by The Benjamin Hotel because it is an old historic building that was revamped into a hotel. I was fascinated that it remains a quaint and alluring establishment amid the hustle and bustle on Florida Road. I loved its convenient location within close proximity to restaurants, malls, the beach and public transport. On arrival, I walked into an antique-styled small reception desk, fresh flowers and sitting areas filled with traditional and retro furniture and decor.
The Room
I stayed in an upstairs corner room overlooking the pool and lush courtyard. Upon opening it, I was welcomed by a soft floral scent and luxurious decor with an urban retro vibe. I loved the printed scatter cushions on the bed as well as the old-fashioned cupboard and chair. The room was spacious with a TV, tea and coffee station as well as an en-suite bathroom. The bathroom window overlooked the room next door, which I didn’t like because there were awkward moments where I forgot to close it, resulting in eye contact with the person inside.
Ambience
The hotel’s alluring and sophisticated decor made me feel relaxed and at home. I loved that there were plenty of tranquil sitting areas by the courtyard, swimming pool, in-house restaurant and reception area where I spent most of my time reading and soaking up the afternoon sun. I also enjoyed my full English breakfast in the restaurant that had white chairs and table cloths with fresh flowers. I appreciated the natural light that flowed through the eatery in the morning.
Overall Experience
I love that this hotel has managed to keep its old-school charm with a subtle modern twist. The staff members were friendly, even offering me towels when I went to the beach. I’ll definitely be visiting it again!
