Yes, we’d all love our homes to look like the put-together, stylish houses we see in magazines, but we don’t all have loads of spare cash available for extravagant home renovations.
Luckily, Decorland is giving away three window makeovers worth R15,000 each. To enter, simply submit a photo of a window in your house that needs an update and tell us why your window should win! Enter here.
While you’re waiting to win, Decorland has some great ideas on how you can update your homes without spending a fortune. These easy DIY projects won’t take longer than an afternoon to finish and they’re all extremely effective ways of revamping a room. Here’s to small changes with big impact!
1. Switch things up
Switching your curtains for blinds is a great way to let more light into a space or to modernise your décor. Don’t be daunted by the cost of blinds; Decorland sells affordable ready-made blinds. And hanging your own blinds really slashes the cost of revamping a room.
Even if you’ve never done a day of DIY in your life, hanging your own blinds is doable! This handy video shows you exactly how to measure a window and hang blinds.
Top tip: The pros always measure 3 times – just in case!
2. Accessorise!
If there’s anything we’ve learned from our resident décor writer, it’s that details can make all the difference. Using practical accessories like curtain holdbacks, tie-backs or finials to bring a stylish touch to every part of a room really helps a look come together.
3. Something new
If you want to make your lounge, dining room or bedroom look more modern in one afternoon, we highly recommend replacing your curtain tracks with curtain rods. All you need is a drill, a measuring tape and a spirit level and you’re a couple of hours away from a room makeover.
We love that Decorland has a great range of colours and materials, so you’re sure to find something to suit the style of your home, whether it’s rustic, modern or somewhere in-between.
Top tip: Longer curtains add height to your room, so consider hanging your curtain rods or tracks further above the window frame.
4. Clever cover-up
Not keen on replacing your curtain tracks? Then buying clip-on-wood rods for your curtain tracks is one of the quickest (and cheapest) ways we can think of to upgrade your décor in an instant. They really add a decorative element to a room, framing windows and turning them into a feature.
5. Makeover magic
Don’t worry, we’re definitely not suggesting you wallpaper every room in your house! But updating a feature wall with a stunning printed wallpaper can make it feel like a brand new room.
If you’re looking for an even easier way to use wallpaper, get creative and use it to give new life to your shelves, cabinets and even your book cases. Apply the wallpaper to the back of shelves for a pop of colour, at a fraction of the cost of buying new pieces.
