Relationships are not always perfect and couples tend to experience friction when it comes to things they don’t like about one another.
These dislikes are known as pet peeves.
The information hub Women’s Day defines a pet peeve as something that specifically annoys or frustrates you about someone else, whether it be an action or behaviour. For instance, when individuals spit in public spaces, this could potentially become a pet peeve for you as the act of doing so is considered unhygienic.
When searching for love and companionship, one may encounter some difficulties in understanding what their specific areas of annoyance are.
The publication BESTLIFE‘s relationship experts found some common problems in relationships while trying to understand how they work.
Here are five common pet peeves during dating:
- Comparison of your relationship to other people: All relationships have different expectations and comparing partners is frustrating, as each couple goes through their own journey. Certified relationship coach Tiya Cunningham-Sumter suggests not assuming what works for one couple will work for another.
- Being friends with your ex: Relationship expert April Masini states that the only time it would be applicable to stay friends with your ex is if you are co-parenting, adding that it could lead to jealousy within your current relationship and a high level of mistrust.
- Not allowing for space: For a relationship to work, it requires both partners to spend time alone or with other people, as allowing for space creates healthy boundaries within the relationship.
- Bad table manners: Most people dislike it when they chew with their mouths open or talk while eating. This demonstrates that you do not have proper table manners and, according to the info hub, is not sexy.
- Not apologising when in the wrong: While in a relationship, individuals must develop the ability to accept responsibility for their faults, as not always taking accountability when you are wrong could lead to either a break-up or an even bigger fight.
