The summer holidays are over, and this means parents are now going up and down preparing for back-to-school. Whilst they are also trying to get their children into the school mode, they have others who are still starting preschool. This is going to be challenging for both the kids and the parents because of separation anxiety.

Here are 5 things you can do for your child who is starting preschool suggested by The Center for Effective Parenting – website that provides information and resources for parents on a variety of topics, including child development, behavior, and parenting strategies.

1. Visit the preschool with your child before the first day.

2. Establish a morning routine to help them get ready for the day.

3. Talk to your child about what to expect at preschool.

4. Encourage your child to make friends and participate in activities.

5. Be positive and supportive as your child adjusts to the new environment.

It is normal for children to be anxious about the first day. If your child is feeling anxious about starting preschool, there are several things you can do to help them manage their emotions suggested by the above-mentioned source.

  • Talk to your child about their feelings and validate their concerns.
  • Practice “drop off” at the preschool with your child before the first day.
  • Establish a routine for saying goodbye.
  • Avoid long, drawn-out goodbyes.
  • Reassure your child that you will return at the end of the day.
  • Stay positive and upbeat about the new experience.
