While we may enjoy the beautiful chaos that is the festive period, this can also be a rather unsettling time for our four-legged furry friends.
Although preparations for the upcoming festivities may be occupying our minds, it is just as important to think about our dogs and prepare them for the hustle and bustle that is to come. Below are five ways to do so:
Stick to routines
With the holidays come busy schedules and travelling. Dog training company Dog Training Elite advises pet owners to try to stick to their dog’s routine as much as possible. As dogs prefer routines, they will be happier and better behaved if they know what to expect.
Be careful with decorations
The decorations that look appealing to you can also look appealing to your dog, which might not be safe for your furry buddy. “Many decorations can be huge temptations for dogs who like to eat and chew things,” says Dog Training Elite. “Things like candles, holiday lights, and seasonal plants should all be kept out of your dog’s reach to ensure they do not eat something dangerous or poisonous.”
Do some exercises
South Africa’s largest online community for pet owners, Pets24, states that our pets will feel the additional tension that is present during the festive season. Taking them for walks, playing with them, or letting them run around the house or garden will make them more peaceful and calmer during this busy time.
Spoil them with treats
This is a great way to keep your pup happy and occupied during the holiday season. Pet24 explains, “Chews and bones are great for reducing stress in dogs. Chewing eliminates boredom in dogs, and research shows it offers stress relief.”
Create a safe space for your dog
During this time, your house may be filled with all things festive and guests coming and going. Ensure that your dog has a safe space by preparing a quiet room behind a closed door, a comfy kennel, or just have them stick with you on the couch, says Dog Training Elite.
