Long international flight layovers can be a daunting prospect, leaving even the most seasoned travelers searching for ways to pass the time. Here are our top tips to survive the wait:
Plan ahead
The key to a successful layover is careful planning. Research the layover airport to discover amenities, services, and attractions that can keep you entertained. Some airports have lounges, spas, or even on-site hotels that offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of the terminal. Knowing what’s available will help you make informed decisions about how to spend your time. Planning is especially important when traveling with kids – they will become impatient and cranky so plan ahead.
Stay active
Sitting for extended periods can leave you feeling lethargic and cramped. Combat this by incorporating some physical activity into your layover routine. Many airports have fitness facilities or walking paths, allowing you to stretch your legs and get some exercise. If these aren’t available, simple stretches or a brisk walk around the terminal can make a significant difference.
Create a comfortable rest zone
Quality rest is crucial during long layovers, especially if you’re adjusting to a different time zone. Pack a neck pillow, an eye mask, and noise-canceling headphones to create a comfortable rest zone. Some airports even have designated sleeping pods or quiet zones where you can catch up on much-needed sleep. Invest in good quality neck pillows, a little blanket if space permits and obviously comfy travel clothes.
In you carry on bag, ensure you have the essentials to freshen up and a change of clothes and undies if needed.
Ensure you are keeping your energy levels up by eating well and staying hydrated.
Entertainment essentials
Load up your electronic devices with your favorite movies, TV shows, books, or podcasts. Most airports provide free Wi-Fi, so take advantage of this to stay entertained during your layover. Consider creating a playlist or downloading a language learning app or movies and series to make productive use of your time while enjoying some entertainment.
It can be challenging travelling with kids so ensuring they are comfortable and entertained is crucial to avoid irritability.
Explore the local area
If your layover is more than a few hours, venture outside the airport to explore the local area. Some airports offer city tours, making it easy to see nearby attractions. Ensure you have enough time to go through security again and factor in any potential transportation delays. Exploring a new city, even briefly, can turn a layover into a mini-adventure.
