Africa is home to 54 mainland countries and islands, the second largest and second most-populous continent on the planet. It boasts an array of cultures, languages and a history that is totally unique.
Each country has a story to tell and places to share with the rest of Africa and the world.
If you take delight in the pleasures of what our continent has to offer, consider the following four countries from each corner of the continent to travel to next time you get bitten by the travel bug.
Namibia
Visit our neighbour to the left if you do not wish to travel too far.
Fun facts
Namibia is home to the largest desert in the world – The Namib desert. It also boasts some of the highest sand dunes in the world, as well as one of the largest concentrations of rock art in Africa.
There is also no need to worry about the currency as they use the Rand interchangeably with the US Dollar.
Some places to visit
Visit Sossusvlei to check out the marvellous red dunes and climb Big Daddy.
You should also visit Etosha National Park to see the wildlife and birdlife.
Another place to explore is Swakopmund, where you will find the famous Skeleton Coast.
Nigeria
Located in West Africa, Nigeria is one of the most popular countries in the area.
Fun facts
Nigeria is the most populated country on the continent and the sixth most populated country in the world, with a population larger than Russia and Mexico.
Move over Hollywood! Nigeria’s Nollywood is the second-largest movie producer, coming second to Bollywood.
Some places to visit
If nature leaves you in awe, you should definitely visit Zuma Rock. It is one of the largest monoliths in the world and is located north of Nigeria’s capital Abuja.
If you are looking for culture and entertainment in the city, be sure to visit Lagos.
Tunisia
Moving up north, Tunisia borders Algeria to the west and Libya to the east. It is also not too far away from Morocco.
Fun facts
In the town of Kebili, people have found bones and tools from the Stone Age, almost 200 000 years ago!
If you are a Star Wars fan, you will love Tunisia. Many scenes from the film were shot in Djerba, Matmata, Tataouine, Medenine and more parts of the country.
Some places to visit
If you want to see a bit of Rome in Africa, specifically a Roman amphitheatre, then you should definitely visit the El Djem amphitheatre. An incredible sight – and site! – for your eyes.
Going to a museum is always a must when travelling to a different country. Visit The National Bardo Museum which houses the world’s most important mosaics.
Kenya
Many people visit Kenya not only for its nature but also for its people and culture.
Fun facts
If you want to visit parks and reserves in Africa, Kenya will probably be on your list, as the country has an impressive total of 22 national parks and 28 national reserves. The country is also the world’s leading safari destination.
In 2004, Kenyan environmental, social and political activist Wangari Muta Maathai was the first woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.
Some places to visit
Besides visiting one of many national parks or reserves, visit Lamu Island. It is home to Kenya’s oldest continually inhabited settlement and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lamu Old Town.
You can also visit an elephant nursery at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust or a giraffe centre near Nairobi National Park.
