October is a month that holds special significance for those looking to embark on a journey towards better health and well-being.
“Ocsober” is a popular challenge where individuals commit to abstaining from alcohol for the entire month. This initiative has gained traction worldwide, promoting a variety of benefits for both physical and mental health.
Here are four easy tips to help you cut back on alcohol by Rural Doctors Foundation:
1. Consider meeting up for a coffee or engaging in some physical activity instead
Why not catch up with friends at a café for a coffee, tea, or non-alcoholic beverage, rather than heading to the pub? You can also reconnect while playing cricket, enjoying a game of tennis, going for a nature hike, or hitting the beach – let your imagination run wild!
2. Seek alternatives
If you’re looking to socialise with a refreshing beverage in hand, opt for a non-alcoholic option. Make sure to intersperse each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. Prioritize water when you’re feeling thirsty, as alcohol can lead to dehydration. You could also opt for a drink with a lower alcohol content or dilute spirits with extra mixer and ice.
3. Incorporate alcohol-free days
Allocate specific days each week for abstaining from alcohol. At the beginning of the week, plan which days suit you best and commit to them! Maintaining three alcohol-free days a week significantly reduces the risk of developing liver cancer.
4. Pair drinking with meals and savor slowly
Shift the focus away from alcohol during social gatherings with friends and family. Instead of opting solely for drinks, relish a meal together. This approach naturally slows down your drinking pace. Take sips of your beverages. Engage in conversations, unwind, and cherish the company of those around you. There’s no need to rush back to the bar.
