Benefits of eating seaweed that you did not expect

There are many benefits of having a plant-based diet, this includes the collection of marine plants called seaweed.

This might not sound at all appetising considering the appearance of these plants, but be that as it may, they are good for you.

Take a look at the benefits of consuming seaweed, that you probably didn’t think of.

Contains iodine and tyrosine

According to Healthline, an online medical information and health hub, seaweed contains iodine and tyrosine which assist the function of the thyroid. The publication claims that hormones released by the thyroid gland assist in regulating growth, metabolism, reproduction and the body’s ability to repair damaged cells. “Your thyroid relies on iodine to make hormones. Without enough iodine, you may start to experience symptoms like weight changes, fatigue, or swelling of the neck over time.”

Provides a range of protective antioxidants 

Healthline also states that free radicals, which are unstable chemicals found in the body, can be rendered less reactive by antioxidants. This reduces the possibility of these chemicals harming your cells. “Moreover, an increased production of free radicals is thought to be the root cause of several illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease. According to the information hub mentioned, seaweed is rich in flavonoids and carotenoids, among other useful plant chemicals, and it also contains antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. “These have been shown to protect your body’s cells from free radical damage.”

Balances sugar levels

The WebMD health publication claims that there is some evidence that chemicals found in seaweed may be useful in controlling blood sugar. According to preliminary research, plant compounds known as polyphenols can help in lowering blood sugar levels. “Some research indicates that fucoxanthin, an antioxidant found in some types of seaweed, also may play a role in blood sugar control.”

Lowers the risk of cancer

Fucoidan, a kind of carbohydrate present in brown seaweed, has been shown in early studies to have anti-cancer potential, claims WebMD. The publication continues to state that “Some other components of seaweed, such as folic acid and polyphenols, are also thought to help protect against cancer. But no clear link has been established.”

Helps with weight loss

“The fibre in seaweed may benefit individuals who are trying to lose weight. This is because fibre is low in calories and helps a person feel full,” claims the Medical News Today publication. Additionally, the publication states that a study published in Marine Drugs found that eating a lot of fibre-rich food delays the emptying of the stomach. Consequently, the stomach might postpone informing the brain about hunger, thereby avoiding eating too much.
