In celebration of Youth Month, we recognise the power of inspiration and the impact of empowering young minds. Mpumelelo Beli, a dedicated photographer from the township, embodies this spirit through his work, capturing moments, and providing hope and motivation to the youth.
“I’ve always loved the ability of being able to freeze time,” Mpumelelo reflects. “Growing up, my uncle owned cameras, and that’s where my fascination began. He would take me along to shoots, capturing birthday celebrations and witnessing the joy on clients’ faces when they saw their special moments preserved forever. Those experiences sparked my love for photography.”
Driven by his passion, Mpumelelo pursued formal education in photography at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, earning his Diploma. “Studying photography not only sharpened my skills but also taught me the business side of things,” he explains.
In 2021, Mpumelelo founded ‘M BELI MEDIA PRODUCTIONS,’ marking a significant milestone in his career. Since then, he has collaborated with notable figures and brands, including a memorable project with Simphiwe Majozi (Uzalo actor) and shooting Zakes Bantwini’s event for the Supersport channel on Dstv.
Growing up in the township presented its own set of challenges. “We faced exposure to substance abuse and violence, We would constantly walk scared of being forced to join gangs or to be pressured into using substance abuse. I overcame all that by making sure that I focused on school and the aspirations I had in life,” Mpumelelo recalls.
Reflecting on his journey, Mpumelelo stated the importance of inspiring youth. “Photography has broadened my perspective, showing me there’s more to the world than just township life,” he shares. “I believe in exposing young people to new experiences, showing them opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings.”
Through mentoring and involving youth in his projects, Mpumelelo strives to ignite passion and ambition in the next generation.
” I would tag along one or two younger people when I go to shoots just to try and make them see things in a different light than they do in the township, it has been a great experience as I would see the excitement in their eyes and the yearning of a better life. That doesn’t happen overnight but with effort and consistency, we can help shape a better future for them. Because I also work with the Amaxhosa royal family, there would be projects that are youth-related, and being part of such projects helps inspire and shape the youth.”
