27 April marks a very monumental day for many South Africans and can be commemorated as a family in many possible ways.
The reason for the celebration is to honour the anniversary of the nation’s first non-racial election of 1994, and pays homage to South Africa’s liberation from Apartheid rule, explains African Travel Canvas. The group of minorities exercised prejudiced political power over the country’s majority.
Due to Freedom Day being a public holiday, many people find themselves at home with their loved ones.
Here are 3 activities that you can do with your family to commemorate the day.
Visit a museum.
Museums around the country offer a rich history for the whole family to absorb. If you are in Cape Town, go to the District Six Museum. Alternatively, if you find yourself in Gauteng, make your way to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg or Mandela’s House in Soweto.
Watch movies about South Africa’s history.
Sarafina! is one of the go-to musical movies that greatly depicts South Africa’s history – the 1976 Soweto youth uprisings.
You and the family can also watch Long Walk to Freedom, based on Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, or Skin, based on a true story about a black girl born to white Afrikaner parents during the Apartheid era.
Blast some iconic local tunes.
South African musicians also played an important role during the Apartheid regime. How about listening to Brenda Fassie’s Black President, Hugh Masekela’s Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela) or Miriam Makeba’s Ndodemnyama (Beware, Verwoerd!) with the family? These are just a few of plenty more to choose from!
