Trust DStv to produce a proudly South African ad to commemorate the start of the Paris Olympics.
Kudos to their marketing team for taking everything that makes us South African and punching them into a one-minute commercial.
The tongue-in-cheek take on the Olympic Games introduces us to Kimmii Bal-Klap in the swingball category, Stevie Slipperman in slip-’n-slide and Temba Braaivuma in braainastics. All three contestants and several others take part in uniquely South African games.
Produced by Retroviral and Panther Punch, the viral ad encourages viewers to sign up for the digital satellite service’s streaming platform.
“The quadrennial event (the Olympics) provides a glimpse into the exceptionalism of the individuals representing our country and DStv Stream provides us the opportunity to live vicariously through these athletes who sacrifice everything to don the Green and Gold,” said co-creator Glen Biderman-Pam.
The video premiered on YouTube in less than 24 hours.
The Paris Olympics is broadcast on DStv’s SuperSport channels. The opening ceremony takes place on Friday night and will be broadcast on SABC1.
This is the first time the opening of the summer games will not be staged in a stadium. Instead, Paris has taken to host the event on the River Seine. US rapper Snoop Dogg will carry the Olympic flame through Saint-Denis.
Snoop Dogg will also act as a “special correspondent” for the Games.
According to Showmax, other carriers in Saint-Denis will include French actress Laetitia Casta, French rapper MC Solaar and Ukrainian retired pole-vaulter Sergey Bubka.
