This weekend, Capetonians experienced the wrath of Mother Nature after gale-force winds damaged many properties in the city, and it seems as though it will not be ending any time soon.
According to SABC News, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a warning for gale-force winds and heavy rain in large parts of the province. Gail-force winds were expected in Cape Town, the Overberg and the Cape Winelands, shared spokesperson Tokelo Chiloane.
IOL reports that the Western Cape government announced that schools in these areas, including Helderberg, will be forced to close due to the level 9 warning issued from SAWS.
Although heavy rain is expected in the Cape, what grabbed the attention of many was the havoc wreaked by the strong gusts of wind. Many social media users shared on various platforms the destruction their neighbours, communities and passersby faced over the past few days.
One video in particular that had the internet talking was that of a truck’s trailer falling off the bridge on the N1, close to the Huguenot Tunnel outside of Paarl.
IOL shares that Mike Vinello-Lippert, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) project manager for the Huguenot Tunnel, confirmed the safety of the driver. However, according to Rebecca Campbell, the spokesperson for the Western Cape Minister of Mobility, three people suffered minor injuries.
