Originally from Bloemfontein in the Free State, 35-year-old Palesa Maluleke, now residing in East London, Eastern Cape, is the owner of the perfume brand Yah Qanna Perfumes which she started in November 2022.
She did not initially have an interest in starting a perfume brand. “I studied at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein. I have a National Diploma in Import and Export Management as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education.” Palesa instead received guidance from someone who attended her place of worship.
BONA spoke to the rising entrepreneur about her journey into the perfume world.
How did you get into the world of perfume?
From a young age, I’ve always been passionate about beauty. Beauty encompasses many aspects including smelling good. When you smell good, you feel confident. Confidence has always been a trait I’ve harvested in myself and sought to help others around me discover. The perfume world became the channel I use to help others show up confidently and a space to share my passion with others.
There was a Mama at my church who encouraged me to explore a career in the beauty industry. She has knowledge and skills in perfumes and offered to teach me how to build a business in the perfume industry. At first, I declined. However, after praying and waiting on God, I decided to take on her offer.
How did you come up with your brand’s name, and what does it mean?
The name of my brand is Yah Qanna which is a Hebrew name meaning ‘Jealous God.’ As a devoted Christian, I wanted a name that would have a meaning centred around God and give honour to Him.
Have you faced any challenges while launching your brand? How did you overcome them?
I have faced countless challenges. I’ve had a lack of adequate financial resources, which has limited me in how I package my product.
So, I saw that the packaging was going to be difficult to get and I decided to find an alternative way to package and distribute my product. I found these beautiful little bags that complement the perfumes as well as the brand as a whole. For where there is a will, there is a way and God created a way.
Palesa also adds, “I would love to take an alternative approach [to packaging]; however, at the moment I am unable to until my business grows a bit more.”
What is your favourite scent that you have produced?
My favourite scent is ‘Bathe Ring.’ It is available in a 50ml bottle.

What tips or advice do you have for youth who wish to build their brand?
You have to be visible. The youth today are blessed with the tool of social media. It can be a space to build and grow your brand’s visibility. Developing one’s personal brand is also a very important aspect of running a business. It allows you to build relationships and network with other experts who can equip you with more knowledge, skills and new trends and advances in the fragrance business.
Attend industry events, workshops and conferences. Sourcing a mentor will also be beneficial as I have a mentor who has guided me extensively and encouraged me on how to start and build a brand. Having one is extremely beneficial to young entrepreneurs, one often neglected.
