Travelling long distances, is often something that goes hand in hand with making good memories as families experience the thrill of seeing the outdoors on their way to their destinations.
While on route the destination is usually filled with lots of excitement for some, for others it’s a case of hell on earth.
This is due to a condition called motion sickness.
Healthline – a medical and lifestyle publication – defines motion sickness as a sensation of wooziness. This is often caused by movement such as cars, boats and amusement rides. The effects of this results in both nausea and vomiting.
According to Cleveland Clinic – an expert medical publication- one in every three people experience motion sickness in their lifetime. Meanwhile it is also explained that Pregnant women as well as children between the ages of two and twelve are most prone.
Mayo Clinic – medical publication – recommends taking the following measures to deal with motion sickness when you find yourself travelling:
Focus on the horizon or on a distant, stationary object. Don’t read or use electronic devices while traveling.
Keep your head still, while resting against a seat back.
- Don’t smoke and don’t sit near smokers.
- Avoid strong odours, spicy and greasy foods, and alcohol.
- Try ginger: A ginger supplement combined with ginger snaps, ginger ale or candied ginger might help curb nausea.
- Eat lightly: Some people find that nibbling on plain crackers and sipping cold water or a carbonated drink without caffeine help.
