How to deal with year-end fatigue

Three months left until we say goodbye to 2024, meaning that we all deal with year-end fatigue of constantly being tired and overwhelmed as we rush to meet our yearly targets.

Understanding year-end fatigue is knowing that it gets everybody not just students or those climbing the corporate ladder. Your body just gets to a phase of being tired and it just becomes unexplainable.

According to health hub, BestMed, fatigue can be described as a whole new level of tiredness and lack of energy from all you have done throughout the year.

The above-mentioned source also states that this fatigue can cause low work productivity in your daily life, adding that, there are many known risks to dealing with this fatigue with some demanding excessive medical attention as you might suffer a stroke or any stress-related illness.

The World Health Organisation says, “End-of-year burnout is fatigue that manifests itself in the workplace, typically in November and December. It’s essentially a buildup of stress over time.”

Here’s what you can do to beat year-end fatigue:

  1. Plan your work: By planning your daily, weekly and monthly tasks you ensure that you get a lot done without missing anything in between.
  2. Take breaks: It’s very important to always put your mental health first but ensure that it doesn’t get in the way of you having to complete certain tasks. Taking breaks not just during studying or work ensures that your brain doesn’t get fried from collecting a lot of information.
  3. Find suitable coping mechanisms: According to Forbes, when you don’t take care of yourself not only do you risk getting sick but it contributes to you experiencing year-end fatigue. The hub also suggests meditation, yoga and exercise as a way to calm yourself down.
  4. Learn to say NO: As you close the year understand that you do not have to over-extend yourself to your family or friends even when you cannot do so, as it could lead to you becoming very tired and overwhelmed when you do not say no and set boundaries with your time.
  5. Seek help: Therapy or counselling is important if you struggle to deal with issues about you as sometimes many people struggle with time management resulting in them procrastinating.
