How to eliminate a social media addiction

by Unathi Balele

Being addicted to social media can have negative effects on an individual’s mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.

According to Help Guide, excessive social media use has been linked to increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. A social media addiction can lead to a decrease in productivity, as individuals may spend hours scrolling through their feeds instead of focusing on work or other important tasks.

Here are five tips by Bustle that can help you eliminate your social media addiction:

  1. Set limits: If you find that you are on social media all day, decide on a specific time limit for using social media each day and stick to it. You can use apps that track your social media usage and set alerts when you reach your daily limit.
  2. Create a schedule: Plan your day and allocate time for specific activities. This will help you stay focused and prevent you from mindlessly scrolling through social media. Try your best to be consistent with this schedule so that you can get into the habit of only being online at certain times of the day.
  3. Turn off notifications: Notifications can be distracting and make it difficult to concentrate on other tasks. Turn off notifications for social media apps or limit them to only important notifications.
  4. Find alternative activities: Replace your social media time with other activities that you enjoy, such as reading, exercising, or spending time with friends and family.
  5. Delete social media apps: If you find it difficult to limit your social media use, consider deleting the apps altogether. This will remove the temptation to check social media and help you break the habit.
