How to get over a crush in a healthy way

by Unathi Balele

We’ve probably all been there, you meet someone you think is cute, and you’ve caught feelings for them. You fantasise over this person and what could be, between the two of you.

Truth is, having a crush on someone is a crazy thing, it gives you butterflies and is just as exciting as it is terrifying.
A lot of us act irrationally or inappropriately when we have a crush without even realising it. Some of these things might jeopardize how the relationship turns out.
However, when your feelings on your crush don’t go anywhere, you might feel rather crushed. You might feel even more devastated when your crush is available but doesn’t reciprocate your feelings, this will indicate that you need to start getting over your crush.

Getting over a crush can be challenging, but it is important to do so in a healthy way to avoid negative emotions and thoughts. Here are some tips by Healthline to help you get over your crush in a healthy way:

  • Accept your feelings: It’s okay to feel the way you do about your crush. Acknowledge your feelings and allow yourself to experience them without judgment.
  • Limit your exposure: If you find yourself constantly checking your crush’s social media or trying to be around them, it’s important to limit your exposure. Avoid situations where you might be tempted to see or interact with them.
  • Focus on yourself: Instead of obsessing over your crush, focus on yourself and your own goals. Take up a new hobby, volunteer, or spend time with friends and family.
  • Practice self-care: Take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Exercise, eat healthily, get enough sleep, and practice relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga.
