How to make new friends as an introvert

by Unathi Balele

Making new friends as an introvert may seem daunting, but it is possible with the right approach. Unlike extroverts, who tend to thrive in social situations, introverts tend to feel drained by socialising and prefer to spend time alone.

However, making new friends is essential for personal growth and happiness, and introverts can learn to develop social skills and build meaningful connections with others.

The Youth Employment highlights the following tips on how you can make friends as an introvert:

Join groups or clubs that align with your interests.

One of the easiest ways to meet like-minded people is to join groups or clubs that align with your interests. Whether you love reading, hiking, or photography, there are countless groups and clubs that cater to various interests. By joining a group or club, you can meet people who share your passion and start building connections with them. Moreover, since you already have something in common, it is easier to initiate conversations and build friendships.

Attend events and social gatherings.

While attending social events and gatherings may seem daunting for introverts, it is a great way to meet new people. You can start by attending events related to your interests or events that your friends or acquaintances invite you to. Once you are at an event, take the initiative to introduce yourself to people and strike up a conversation. You can start by asking them questions about themselves or sharing something about yourself. Remember, everyone is at the event to socialise and make connections, so do not be afraid to put yourself out there.

Be authentic.

Finally, the most important tip for making new friends as an introvert is to be authentic. You do not have to pretend to be someone you are not or force yourself to be outgoing. Instead, embrace your introverted nature and be true to yourself. People appreciate authenticity and are more likely to connect with you if you are genuine. By being yourself, you can attract people who share your values and interests and build meaningful friendships.
