Hijackings have unfortunately become part of the reality for those living in South Africa. In December last year, a report issued by the South African Police Services (SAPS) revealed that 5488 cars were hijacked in the second quarter of 2023.
An estimated amount of 60 hijackings were reported daily with 70% of them happening in driveways according to Crime SA.
This is more than enough reason to be concerned and should be a motivation for many to become more street-smart and find ways of ensuring that they remain safe and aware of their surroundings to prevent the same from happening to them.
Dekra, a company specialising in roadworthiness and safety inspection checks, has recommended the following steps to ensure that you are safe at all times.
Safety tips:
- Keep a wide gap when approaching a red traffic light. The correct distance should allow you to see the back wheels of the vehicle in front of you. This will allow you to get away safely if needed without obstruction in front of you.
- Before pulling into your driveway, park in the street and wait for your door or gate to open, this will make it difficult for hijackers to box you in. However, it is important to note that if you have a manual gate, you should leave your ignition on – unless you have your children with you because then you will have to remove your keys – this will give you something to negotiate.
- Stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings even in the quietest and safest places.
Additionally, Car Track – a company that specialises in GPS tracking and engine maintenance recommends the following tips to those who might find themselves in a hijacking:
- Do exactly as told by the hijacker.
- Do not attempt to challenge the hijacker, or lose your temper.
- Do not make eye contact with the hijacker, as they could perceive your behaviour as a threat.
- Make sure to not make any sudden movements.
- Do not reach for your purse or valuables. Leave everything in the vehicle.
- Try and remain calm at all times and do show any signs of aggression.
