Most babies are often irritable and have skin issues during summer time, but if there is one thing you cannot control as a super mom, it is a heatwave or humid weather conditions.

A Baby’s skin is delicate, thin and prone to skin problems, it is often advised by doctors to have a daily skincare routine, so that you can identify easily when you’re using the wrong products for their skin or whether they have skin reactions.

From the age of six months old, you are able to apply sunscreen on your baby. In fact, it is recommended by Baby Womb Day that you should use a dermatologically tested sunscreen with chemical-free, broad-spectrum kid-safe sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

According to Nature’s Baby here are ways you can start protecting your baby’s skin during summer:

Taking care of the skin

  1. Have a skincare routine
  2. Be careful of what your baby is exposed to
  3. Don’t expose the baby to direct sunlight

The clothes you choose for your baby

Cotton is the recommended fabric for babies in summer as it is gentle on the skin and it has absorbability.

When going out, your baby must be fully clothed, with hats, long sleeves and pants.

Dark colors are known to absorb heat, it is recommended to use colors such as pastel.

The importance of moisturizing the baby’s skin

The heat often dehydrates the baby’s skin during summertime, leaving the skin dry and itchy. It is essential to moisturize using lotions that are sensitive to baby skin.

Nature’s Babies  also recommends using coconut oil, aloe vera, or shea butter as natural remedies to nourish, heal, soothe and moisturize your baby’s sensitive skin.

3 Ways to treat sunburn on toddlers and babies advised by Midwife, Christine Klynhans from Baby Womb World:

  1. Give the child enough fluid to prevent dehydration
  2. Give the child a cool bath
  3. Give the child paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease the pain and inflammation or immediately see a pediatrician for babies under 6 months old
