It’s time to let go of your sleeping pills and focus instead on becoming more intimate with your partner.
This month, the SLEEP 2023 annual conference featured a presentation of a new survey produced by the journal Sleep. According to the study survey’s findings, three out of four respondents reported getting a better night’s sleep after sex. The adults admitted that having sex was more effective than taking sleeping pills.
Sex can improve the quality of sleep since it lowers stress levels and makes it easier to go to sleep at night, according to Dr. Shelby Harris, director of sleep health at Sleepopolis.
“Sex can oftentimes improve your sleep quality, reduce stress, and help you fall asleep faster at night- as long as it’s not interfering with your sleep and you are getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep a night for adults,” Dr. Harris said.
More about the study
53 Adult participants were asked to complete an eight-question online survey as part of the study, with 89% of them being between the ages of 23 and 49.
According to the survey’s findings, 75% of respondents claimed that having sex just before bed helped them sleep better. Some even claimed that having sex not only made it easier for them to fall asleep, but also increased the quality of their sleep.
Benefits of Sex before Sleep
- Sex has benefits for both you and your partner. Sex before bed enables you to obtain the sleep you need to operate well during the next day.
- Sex will generally improve your sleep, which is the most important noticeable effect. Prolactin, a hormone that calms you, is produced by your body after intercourse. Prolactin levels are 400% higher in both men and women after intercourse, according to a previous study.
- Oxytocin, a hormone your body also creates after sex, can help cement your sexual connection with your partner. While sex raises some healthy hormones, it also lowers those that could affect our ability to sleep, such the stress hormone cortisol. Women experience deeper REM sleep as a result of rising estrogen levels.
- The advantages of sex before sleep have been confirmed by a new Canadian study. Researchers from the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada, recently suggested that sex might be a viable alternative to currently used methods of treating insomnia.
