You’ve made it to the other side of a dreary, cold winter. Hotter temperatures have replaced the cold.
Although extra humidity and exposure to the sun are the biggest signifiers that summer is finally here, so is the need to be hypervigilant about your skin as you spend long afternoons poolside soaking up much-needed vitamin D.
During summer, it’s normal to want to simplify many areas in your life. The first was probably that massive wardrobe clear-out you did at the start of spring. And because you’re in the mood to purge, this has trickled down into the products you use for your daily beauty routine.
When the weather is warmer, layering serums and slathering on creams doesn’t sound as appealing as it does during winter. Physiologically, because of the excess humidity in the air, your skin receives all the moisture it needs and more, so applying a million products may seem excessive.
That’s why we have broken down four essential skincare habits you need to adopt to ensure your skin performs at its best this summer.
SPF, SPF, SPF
If you remember only one thing from this article, let it be this: wear sunscreen. Although this is a must-do year-round, many people forgo sun protection during winter and allow that bad habit to continue into summer.
A broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is a good place to start as the final step in your skincare routine. If you intend to soak up the sun all day long, remember to reapply it every two hours to remain protected throughout the afternoon.
A good way to measure if you’re applying the correct amount is to use half a teaspoon for your face and neck and a full teaspoon for each arm and leg. Use these measurements when reapplying, too.
Choosing the right sunscreen can often be a case of trial and error. A formula that is moisturising, non-greasy, doesn’t leave a greyish or blue film and offers decent protection is sometimes hard to come by, but one we know and love is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ R350, Dermastore. If you have oily skin, there is an option to accommodate that concern, too.
Moisturise, But Keep It Light
Although sweat and humidity may make it seem like you don’t need to moisturise during summer, you do. Moisturisers reestablish the outermost layer of the skin, which protects you from harmful pollutants, chemicals, dryness and further irritation. A lightweight and hyaluronic-acid-based formula is a great place to start.
Water cream textures with healthy doses of hyaluronic acid effectively maintain hydration without making your skin feel sticky or heavy. Bonus points if the formula has added sun protection.

Exfoliating Is Key
Although we’re talking about simplifying our beauty routine, regularly exfoliating during the week is a great way to open blocked pores and remove excess oils that cause acne. If you have oily skin,
you will benefit most from a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) like salicylic acid, as they are more effective at penetrating pores and clearing up blemishes.
Dry skin types will appreciate something gentler, such as an AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid)like glycolic acid. Chemical exfoliants effectively clean out pores, revealing smoother, glowing skin.
To get deep into your pores, try Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant from R329, ARC. Prefer something gentler? Try The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, R280, Superbalist.
Remember that if you’re exfoliating two to three times a week or even daily, your skin becomes more sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays, so investing in a hard-working UV protection product is super important.
Opt for Non-comedogenic Make-up
Summertime on our shores also means the festive season is upon us. Most people’s social calendars are chock-full of events, parties and dinners to attend. We want to look our best with a touch of glam, but we recommend doing so with non-comedogenic products.
This is make-up that does not clog pores and is generally safer to use without fear of suffering a breakout. Consider foundations that are described as lightweight and breathable, and remember to avoid products containing heavy oils and petroleum jelly.
We love the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Long Wear Foundation R770, Truworths. You can also try the Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup R675, Woolworths.
