Rising from rural beginnings: Eastern Cape woman becomes a celebrated mathematician

Aviwe Sofoyiya is an inspiring mathematician and math author from the Eastern Cape, who published her first grade 12 mathematics manual.

The recent Cape Peninsula University of Technology graduate took to her Facebook account and announced that her grade 12 math books were now available for purchase, which was an exciting development.

She shares briefly what it took for her to be at this point in her life. “This was probably the most challenging moment of my life so far. Having to resign from work under toxic conditions, running my small business, and writing a book. I had countless breakdowns,” she said.

She is grateful to her amazing publisher, Marcia Ramodike at Evelyn50 Publishing, who encouraged her to step beyond her comfort zone. Marcia’s support has left her eternally thankful.

“I finished some chapters while in tears!”, she added. Aviwe expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, and boyfriend for carrying her throughout and believing in her.

In addition to her academic developments, the author also has a small organic skin care and hair product business.
