With large parts of the Western Cape experiencing the harsh effects of the cold front that has taken the province by storm this week, staying safe and remaining indoors is vital to ensuring that you save yourself the risk of falling ill or gaining injuries as a result of outdoor travel.
According to the South African weather services website, the cold front is said to affect large parts of the province with some regions including, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, the Overberg as well as the Garden Route region
To date, there have been several reports of flooding and landslides that have occurred all over the city.
With more rain expected to come throughout the course of the week, we have a list of things you can do to ensure that you survive the effects of the cold weather.
Here is a list of general tips on what you can do, according to the National Weather Service:
- Minimise travel.
- Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
- Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.
- Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.
- Check on the elderly.
- Bring pets inside.
Additionally, those looking to go to the mall to purchase essential needs may do so, however, it is important that the following measures are upheld.
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, and a hat.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
