We all know food can improve our mood; I mean comfort foods exist for a reason! But did you know that certain foods can actually boost your mood and reduce depression, according to science? Here’s a definitive list of foods to boost your mood!
Beware, pasta, pizzas, and mac ‘n cheese aren’t included on this list (unless you need comfort food).
Fish, fish, fish
Foods rich in omega-3s, like fish, are known as “brain food” and are proven to help boost serotonin. Some studies have proven that those who consumed fish high in omega-3 had lower depression scores.
So, grab that fish and chips meal every so often – you’ll be happier for it.
Bananas
Bananas are high in vitamin B6, a key vitamin that helps synthesize dopamine and serotonin! The sugar and fibre combination in bananas can also help regulate mood control – a major bonus! The high potassium levels can help your body regulate stress hormones and boost your mood overall.
Nuts and seeds
While nuts and seeds are the ultimate runner’s mix, they can help boost your mood, even when you’re not crazy enough to wake up at 5 am and put on running shoes.
Nuts and seeds are rich in proteins, healthy fats, and fibres. This helps keep your brain healthy and, even better, they help boost serotonin, keeping you happy.
Berries
Berries are filled with antioxidants and anthocyanins (the thing that makes berries blue or purple). These can help reduce depression by a significant amount.
If you’re not a fan of fresh berries, you can buy frozen punnets and add them to smoothies!
Coffee
Yes! The one thing that makes sense in practice (at least to me). Not only does it taste good, but the caffeine and chlorogenic acid in coffee are a mood booster! It helps release dopamine and norepinephrine.
If you’re not a fan of caffeine, some studies have shown that decaf coffee can have similar mood-boosting effects!
Dark chocolate
More good news! Chocolate is a mood booster too! Especially dark chocolate, which contains flavonoids that increase blood flow to the brain, releasing feel-good endorphins.
Plus, it’s a fabulous source of antioxidants, making it a delicious guilt-free pleasure.
