Many are conflicted about whether or not they should sleep with a bra on. Some who sleep with it on may say that it supports breast health, while others may think it constrains them. So, what is the true answer?
The answer is that there is no right or wrong answer. Sleeping with a bra on is a personal choice.
Fertility specialist and board-certified OBGYN Dr Lucky Sekhon tells the publication Byrdie that sleeping in a bra could be beneficial. The activity can reduce discomfort related to breast swelling, whether due to hormonal changes, engorgement during breastfeeding, or when trying to wean off of breastfeeding.
You might also wonder if sleeping without a bra affects the elasticity of your breasts. Says breast surgeon Dr Heather Richardson, “While some women may be more comfortable wearing a bra to bed, there is no proof that continued support through the night has any significant effect on breast tissue.”
The doctor continued, “There have been attempts to both prove and disprove that wearing a bra either saves the internal ligaments from fatiguing with its support or that keeping the tissues from ‘working’ to support themselves makes them too weak and soft.” Dr Richardson adds that genetics, along with breastfeeding routines has far more influence on how breast shape and appearance are maintained over time, and that it has nothing to do with whether or not one wears a bra to bed.
Dr Sekhon further tells Byrdie that sleeping in a bra does not impair blood circulation, cause breast cancer, or stunt breast growth. However, it can cause potential skin issues.
Bodywear brand Okko’s CEO and founder Phoebe Kunitomi explains to the above publication, “Wearing a dirty bra can accumulate oil, sweat, and bacteria and result in skin irritation or acne, during the day and at night.” Because of this, it is important that you wash your bra to avoid such skin irritations.
So, to reiterate, wearing a bra is all about your personal choice. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to supporting your breast friends, as long as you keep your undergarments clean!
