In today’s world, having a side hustle has become more than just a way to make extra money—it’s a chance to explore your passions and build something of your own. For young people in South Africa, side hustles offer opportunities to tap into creativity, develop new skills, and gain financial independence, which they need in this shaky economy.

There are plenty of ways to start earning on your own terms. It’s about finding what works for you and taking that first step toward creating your own success story.

The Tyme Bank publication states that selling preowned items online is a great way to make extra income while on tight budgets. It is suggested that you research local marketplaces and sites to list your items and take clear, well-lit photos. Practice caution when exchanging cash, and arrange to meet in public spaces.

The above source also encourages youngsters to take online surveys to earn extra income by providing feedback on brands and their products.

“Many people don’t enjoy making themselves lunch or they simply don’t have the time. If you work in an office park or a busy area during the day, you can pre-make healthy, hearty meals and then sell them during your lunch hour.”

According to Spotify, YouTube’s 2.5 billion users can be monetised through the YouTube Partner Program, which allows users to earn money from ads shown during their videos. However, it is mentioned that it takes time to gather enough viewers to earn a lot from ads.

Other ways to monetise content according to the above source include partnering with brands to promote their products, directing viewers to buy products from your online store, creating engaging videos and shorts, and exploring monetisation strategies.

Podcasting is also said to be a popular and affordable way to make money if you are someone who believes they have content worthy of listening to, with themes and topics that resonate with target audiences.

My Debt Hero adds that freelancing, commerce, in-person services, consulting, delivery and transportation services, creative arts and entertainment, real estate and property management, and event planning are all potential side hustles that can be done remotely, in person, or through various online platforms. These are believed to provide a flexible and lucrative income.
