Simple ways to build lasting habits for 2025

by Limpho Nonkonyane

Letting go of old habits and adopting new ones can be one of the hardest challenges, especially when you are familiarised with your routine.

The New Year, New Me concept is something many of us adapt to especially in the new year as some believe that a new year erases old mistakes, giving them a chance to start afresh.

Every new year, you take time to reflect on your old habits and find effective ways to build newer habits that could help you live a happier and stress-free life.

Forbes emphasises that developing new habits, especially in the workplace, can increase productivity, foster relationships, and help you achieve career milestones. This preparation allows you to face the challenges of 2025 with confidence.

When establishing what healthy habits you want to adapt to it is essential to take note of the things that make you happy and content with life and do more of those and learn to let go of things that cause distractions and you not to be focused on achieving your goals.

Onsurity discusses ways to be happy, drawing on the late author Henry David Thoreau’s simile of happiness to a butterfly, meaning that it can be found quietly in life’s most fundamental moments, adding that, instead of chasing happiness, look for it in smaller behaviours rather than in making drastic changes or strict routines.

Here are ways to build new habits in 2025

  • Alone time: It is important to spend time with yourself as you will learn a lot about yourself allowing you to understand your behaviours towards others and how it impacts you.
  • Limit screen time: Set aside short, tech-free intervals throughout the day to reconnect with oneself.
  • Gratitude journal: Each morning, mentally acknowledge three things for which you are grateful.
  • Save more: Tap into having multiple streams of income and always upskill yourself.
  • Creating a “Yes” list: Make a bucket list for the month and say “yes” to modest, fresh experiences that shake up your routine.
