Every year on the streets of South Africa’s social media, there is always something to shake the nation in every possible way, from diet trends, fitness goals, and dance challenges, all the way to finding Gucci shoes. All I’m saying is that social media in this country is the place to camp for entertainment and all things unpredictable.
As a nation, we are known to be people of rhythm and good music, and with that comes creative dance moves especially from the young generation. For the whole year until now, Tiktok has kept the whole country on its toes with dance challenges to almost all ready songs released. With the amount of pressure these challenges have created amongst the masses, every internet user from young to old has attempted to hop on these challenges and prove themselves.
These are the most popular dance challenges that have taken over TikTok so far:
Tshwala bam
This song by the young and vibrant music producers TiTom and Yuppe featuring vocals from S.N.E and EeQue, made waves on the internet, more especially after a dance challenge was initiated from it. The dance has been gone literally from Cape to Cairo because it didn’t only end in SA but dominated the majority of the continent, with international celebrities the likes of Jason Derulo and Chris brown seen on music videos incorporating the dance in their own choreographs.

Barcadi dance
According to Yahoo Entertainment, the Bacardi dance style was originated by South African artist Tyla, “Incorporating it into her hit song ‘Water’ dance routine. Some call the dance the ‘TYLA DANCE’ because of her role in making it popular on TikTok. However, Tyla has said in an interview that she prefers the name Bacardi dance.” Many internet users, male or female, have taken it upon themselves to practise this twerk-like dance move and it made them feel good.

Skuta challenge
This one is my personal favourite for three reasons. First of all, the song is fire, you can’t help but dance along when it plays. Secondly, the dance is simple, doesn’t involve too much work and anyone can do it. Another reason is that it comes from a cultural background which promotes the Zulu culture and its roots. The song ‘Skuta Baba’ by the Woodblock DJs, Mvelost, Set Off, and Somololo includes the isiZulu famous traditional dance move called ukusina, which is basically kicking your leg high up and stomping it violently to the ground. There has been a different version of this dance circulating TikTok, with some doing it with the same energy as the originators and some doing it with so much grace that they don’t even raise their legs, but it still looks fun.
