If you are a black South African you would know the importance of broth, often known as gravy, when cooking meat. I know for a fact that no matter how much I try to be explorative with my cooking skills, when it comes to cooking meat, my dad would very much prefer that it has broth.
It has been stated by several nutritionists that out of many types of broth, bone broth has loads of health benefits and that one should learn how to make it properly to receive all the goodness it comes with.
According to Good Food, bone broth is a protein-rich liquid made by simmering meaty bones and joints in water, and is a versatile base for soups, stews, and risottos.
Let’s have a look at some of the pros of consuming this delicious liquid:
Anti-ageing: The above-mentioned publication claims that bone broth, rich in collagen, has been linked to anti-ageing benefits and that consuming 300ml of bone broth increases plasma levels of precursor amino acids, which are necessary for collagen formation. “In clinical trials, collagen, taken as a supplement, was able to improve the hydration, elasticity and appearance of wrinkles in human skin.”
Supports gut health: It is stated by Healthline that this liquid may help prevent inflammation and protect the mucosal lining of the digestive tract. It is said to contain glutamic acid, which converts to glutamine and thus helps maintain intestinal wall function. “It may help prevent and heal a condition known as “leaky gut,” a symptom of several chronic gastrointestinal diseases. A leaky gut is when damage occurs between the barrier between your gut and the bloodstream, allowing substances to leak from your gut into your bloodstream.”
Helps your joints: The publication mentioned above further states that bone broth contains collagen, a protein found in bones, tendons, and ligaments, and gelatin, a protein containing amino acids like proline and glycine. These amino acids are believed to support joint health, but their levels are lower in bone broth than in supplements.
Enhances weight loss: According to WebMD, “Bone broth can be a part of a healthy weight loss regime. It is loaded with protein—about 10 grams per serving—that can help you feel full for longer.” Additionally, it is claimed that this extra protein can aid in building lean muscle mass, enabling the body to burn more calories throughout the day.
Good for skin health: Collagen (found in bone broth) is known to enhance skin elasticity, reducing signs of ageing like wrinkles and crepey skin, states the Cleveland Clinic.
