If you have missed your monthly cycle, is that an indication that you are expecting a bundle of joy? While a missed period is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy, it is not the only sign to look out for.
The health information hub HealthPartners notes that a pregnancy test may give you the answer, but if it is too early to take the test, look out for noticeable signs. However, it is also possible to experience early pregnancy symptoms and not be pregnant.
Below is a list of early symptoms of pregnancy.
Mayo Clinic – the largest integrated, not-for-profit medical group practice in the world – shares some of the classic pregnancy symptoms:
Fatigue
Although it is not known for certain what causes sleepiness during the first trimester, Mayo Clinic shares that a rapid rise in progesterone levels during early pregnancy might contribute to fatigue.
Increased urination
“The amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy, causing your kidneys to process extra fluid that ends up in your bladder,” explains the above-mentioned information hub.
Nausea with or without vomiting
Also known as morning sickness (although it can occur any time of the day), nausea during pregnancy often starts one to two months after you become pregnant. Mayo Clinic adds, “However, some women feel nausea earlier and some never experience it.”
Tender, swollen breasts
If you think you are pregnant, you may feel tenderness in your breasts. Fortunately, the discomfort will likely subside after a few weeks as your body adjusts to hormonal changes, says the Mayo Clinic.
HealthPartners also adds a few symptoms you can look out for:
- Spotting or light bleeding.
- Lower abdominal pain or cramping.
- Higher basal body temperature.
- Changes in cervical mucus.
- Food aversions and appetite changes.
- Darkening areolas.
- Bloating or constipation.
- Sensitivity to smell.
- Mood changes.
- Nasal congestion.
- Headaches and/or dizziness.
“When it comes to the first symptoms of pregnancy, everyone is different,” states HealthPartners. “Some people start to notice changes within a week after conception. Others might not notice anything until they miss their period. On average, if you do experience symptoms, they’ll likely occur by your fifth or sixth week of pregnancy.”
