Tips for a healthier relationship with your phone

by Unathi Balele

In today’s digital age, smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. They keep us connected with our friends and family, provide us with endless entertainment options, and even help us manage our day-to-day tasks.

However, with constant notifications, social media, and the endless scroll of newsfeeds, it’s easy to fall into the trap of being glued to our phones 24/7. This can lead to negative consequences such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, and even addiction.

Therefore, it’s important to establish a healthy relationship with your phone. Money Control suggests the following tips that can help:

  • Set Boundaries: Decide when and where you’ll use your phone. For example, you could avoid using your phone during meals, while driving, or during meetings. You could also establish a set time to check your email or social media.
  • Turn Off Notifications: Notifications can be distracting and disrupt your workflow. Therefore, turn off notifications for non-essential apps and only keep the important ones. This way, you won’t be bombarded with notifications all day long.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Being aware of your phone usage and taking breaks throughout the day can help reduce stress and increase productivity. Consider practicing mindfulness or meditation to help you stay present and calm.
  • Use Your Phone Intentionally: Instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media, use your phone intentionally by setting goals for what you want to accomplish and sticking to them. This could be as simple as checking your emails twice a day or setting a limit on social media usage.
