To shave or to wax…? A question that may plague most people’s minds. However, the better question is: What way of removing my hair is best for my skin?
Because laser hair removal can be a bit expensive, many opt for the less expensive options such as waxing and shaving. According to Cleveland Clinic, dermatologist Sarah Young, MD, gives the pros and cons of the two methods.
Pros of waxing
- Not only can your skin feel smoother, but your hair can also come out thinner over time.
- Waxing can serve as a form of exfoliation.
- Results from waxing can last between three and four weeks.
Cons of waxing
- Waxing entails removing the hair from the root. Therefore, for some, it can be quite painful. The hot wax can also burn your skin if you’re not careful.
- It can cause inflamed hair follicles, pain, redness, ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
- Your hair needs to be at least 12mm to wax.
Pros of shaving
- It is a quick and easy process to do at home as part of a daily routine.
- The tools used for shaving cost less than booking a wax appointment at a salon.
- Your hair can be any length.
- It is not painful as it is only removing the hair follicle from the surface of the skin and leaves the root intact.
Cons of shaving
- Results of shaving only last one to three days.
- Dull blades can cause irritation and cuts.
- It can cause inflamed hair follicles, ingrown hairs, razor burns and itching.
Even though both techniques help to get rid of unwanted hair, both have their pros and cons. There is no right answer as to whether you should wax or shave, the choice is up to you.
