Lungisani Mjaji, the photographer who snapped the heartwarming “Albany bread girl” image has revealed that the bread brand has not compensated them.
Lethukukhanya Mjaji, the star of the iconic picture who is also known as Miss Albany, captured the hearts of many when her uncle, Lungisani, shared the picture of her smiling brightly while holding a loaf of the brand’s bread.
Thanking South Africans for their support following the image’s virality, Lungisani wrote, “While the image may not be a part of Albany’s campaign, our journey continues with even more enthusiasm. Rest assured, my niece’s bright future and my own endeavours remain as vibrant as ever.”

As reported by The Citizen in July last year, the bread company visited the then three-year-old girl last year after the image went viral, providing her with gifts, loaves of bread and more.
However, the award-winning photographer stated on X (the app formally known as Twitter) that they were not recompensed.
He wrote on the app, “We received no compensation from that Albany thing. Let’s dispel the notion that we gained anything from it. We’ve moved on, we’re creating, and I trust that God will guide our path. I’ll personally support the child with what little I have. ‘Ubuntu abusekho (There is no more ubuntu).'”

Shocked by the revelation, an X user asked the photographer for clarity on whether or not Albany “lived up to their promise.” In response, Lungisani stated, “Not even isonka (bread). I only support the child with the money I get from companies who work with me in photography campaigns.”
