What you eat before a workout can determine the energy you will exert during your workout session. Whether you are a seasoned fitness junkie or new to the game, it is important to know what foods to eat before your workout session.
It is great to choose foods that you enjoy so that your journey with food is pleasant, but it is also important to choose foods that will benefit you in the long run.
Dr. Chirag Sethi and Dr. Swarna Anchal from Classic Fitness Academy, recommends not to eat right before your workout session because your muscles will be in the process of training while your stomach will be digesting food and this could disrupt your performance and can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
They recommend to eat a meal one to four hours before your workout session depending on how you tolerate food. They also suggest eating a meal with carbohydrates as this acts as fuel for your body.
Examples of carbohydrate rich foods include: fruits such as bananas and apples, dairy products such as yogurt and milk which is great to add with your morning cereal.
A pre workout snack is great way to boost your energy before your workout. According to Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), a pre workout snack should be low in fiber and fat because you would need a snack that is easy to digest. They suggest snacks like bananas, yogurt, pretzels, peanut butter or a protein rich sandwich of your choice. You could also opt for an energy bar to snack on before you workout.
We all know how important drinking water is. Keeping your body efficiency hydrated is essential especially before and during your workouts. The HSS suggests that if you doing more intense workouts that last longer than ninety minutes, you could include a sports drink to provide extra sodium through electrolytes which can help to delay fatigue and maintain energy.
