Some time in our childhood, we were told to reduce, reuse, and recycle the bits and pieces of waste we encounter to make the earth a cleaner and better place. When it comes to promoting hygiene in our nether regions, there is no harm in wearing the same undies, however, it is important that a fresh pair is worn each and every day.
So, why is important to change underwear daily (or even more frequently throughout the day?)
According to the health and wellness publication The Healthy, OBGYN Sherry Ross, M.D. states that dirty or used underwear provides a breeding ground for bacteria, yeast and fungi, and are often contaminated with faecal matter. Healthshots, another health publication, explains that yeast infections are one of the most common issues that women suffer from as a result of improper hygiene practices.
Repeated undies can also bring on unwanted, foul odours. Healthshots states that the accumulated buildup of discharge and moisture can lead to a lingering foul smell which can be both embarrassing and unhealthy.
Board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, M.D. tells The Healthy that acne is another concern. The dirty underwear traps sweat, dirt and bacteria, holding them close to the skin and creating painful red bumps. Marisa says, “When sweat or oil sits on the skin for too long, it can lead to bad odour or clogged pores, leading to breakouts.”
Lastly, the skin can also develop painful and uncomfortable rashes. “Not changing your underwear daily can make your skin irritated, inflamed and sensitive because of the extra moisture,” explains Healthshots.
