We are celebrating newlyweds Derrick (26) and Shiluva(26) Nkanyani’s love as our September #BONAWeddings winners!
August #BONAWeddings winners: The Nkalanes
Shiluva wrote in to tell us all about their love story saying: “It all started when we became friends on Facebook. I was studying at the University of Pretoria and I had a friend who happened to be Shiluva`s closest friend (through their parents), her name was Nyiko Chauke (Vhandezi). As normal Facebook friends we would comment on each other`s pictures and statuses and we have to admit we would check each other’s pictures every now and then.”
Shiluva shares that it was Derrick that made the first move: “he inboxed me and asked for my numbers, which I was not even hesitant to give away. We would call each other day in and out. Our love was so good that we were sure from the beginning that one day we will get married. We officially started dating on the 18th of January 2015. We both felt in love with each other.”
A little over a year after they had started dating, things got even more serious. Shiluva remembers their engagement fondly and says with laughter: “Derrick didn’t actually propose, but rather in 2016 around February or March whilst still in Turfloop, he just said “let us go to mall of the North I want to buy you a ring to show you that I am really serious about you.” In 2017 February he just told me that he wants to send his family to ask for a date for the lobola negotiations that was it!
The couple got married on 7 July 2018 at Born Again Christian Church in Maphophe Village. “We choose the venue because of its size, because we wanted a venue that will accommodate everyone since we were expecting more than 500 guests”
The couple loved every part of their wedding but single out “our marriage vows and the kiss stood out, and the cars used to carry the bridal party were lit! We also loved the groom`s suit, bride`s dress…”

The couple didn’t have a particular first dance song but says “we danced to the performance by our guest artists Wisdom Kay & Jimmy; they sang a medley of songs Mthande by Musa and Ndikuthandile by Vusi Nova. The songs were a surprise but we really loved them and danced a lot.”
“Our marriage is the greatest blessing in our lives. The transition to being married is very nice; we do almost everything together and liaise with each other time and again.”
The newlyweds keep the spark in their relationship by “going out to the movies, taking walks together at night, shopping together and spend much time indoors cuddling and doing what lovers do.”
The Nkanyanis’ secret ingredients to a lasting relationship:
