This October we are celebrating Slungile (30) and Nkosana Makhaya (32) who have been married since 2016.
Slungile wrote in to tell us how they met saying, “Nkosana and I have known each other since I was about 13 and he was 15 because we lived in pretty much the same street. He has always been the guy I knew I would end up getting married to even though he was a player. And boy was I right! So we started dating when I was 16 but he always had his girlfriends on the side and I would always find out and we would breakup. However, somehow we would always find our way back to each other. We started being serious after I finished my matric year where we were inseparable. Eventually we both started working and we were fast becoming adults. We basically grew up together and we know each other inside and out…”
Getting serious
“We started living together in 2009 and in 2010 I fell pregnant with our first daughter which is when he decided that he wants to marry me and he started the lobola negotiations with my family. He took my cousin and me out to a restaurant in Vilakazi Street in Soweto for dinner and he popped the question there in October 2010. Our daughter was then born in 2011 then we decided to first buy a house before we have a big wedding and that’s what we did. Eventually in 2016 January we decided we had saved enough and were in a good place where we could now have our wedding and on 17 December 2016 we celebrated our wedding. It was a 2 day event so on the 16th we had our traditional wedding then the 17th we had our white wedding. Since home for the both of us was in the same street we decided to have a big celebration in the same street and the church was also in the same street so we had an amazing day with beautiful weather with minimal stress.”

The couple had their first dance to Liquideep- Stilll. “It’s a song we’ve always liked so it was easy to decide that that would be our first dance song”
Making it work
What works for us is lots of communication, patience, and love mostly because we really didn’t have much when we first got together and here we are: we’ve just finished building our dream house and are raising our 2 girls in a happy home. We have 2 beautiful baby girls Lethokuhle and Ntokozo who are 7 and 3. Also, we never stopped dating that’s how we keep the love and passion burning.
