Celebrate the enduring love of Jabulile Mkhulisi-Zwane(43) and her husband Thabani Zwane(42).
Jabulile says they met in church in 1994, and it was Thabani that made the first move. “He approached me after the examination prayer, and told me that he wants to marry me. I was shocked because we were young at that time, so I didn’t take him seriously. I also wasn’t ready for a relationship, and even less so for marriage.” Jabulile admits that she wasn’t initially interested at all but Thabani never lost hope. “He kept begging (me to be with him) for years.”
Making it official
In 1999 Thabani’s persistence finally paid off and Jabulile started having feelings for him and decided to date him. “In 2000 there was a function at our church so he asked me to meet him outside. I went and he pulled out a ring from his pocket and said ‘this is a promise ring and that one day I will make you my wife’ and I accepted the ring.”
The big day
After being together for over 18 years, Thabani and Jabulile said “I do!” on 17 November 2018 at Our Lady Of Grace Catholic Church. The reception was at Amanzimtoti Civic Hall. “Our first dance song was to Brand New by Professor. The song says: ‘you make me feel brand new, ngithanda wena wedwa’ meaning ungenza ngizizwe ngimusha ngithanda wena wedwa.”
Growing together
The Zwanes’ journey has not been without challenges, and in 2001 they lost their first child, a son, after he was stillborn.
Jabulile shares, “it was very hard for both of us because when I was pregnant Thabani had to leave Umlazi to Umthwalume, so when I lost the baby we couldn’t support each other the way we wanted to up until he came back to stay with his uncle in another section of Umlazi. We now have 2 wonderful children- a 16 year old girl and a 10 year old boy.”
Making it last
The Zwanes share that their almost two decade old love has remained strong because of communication, loyalty, respect, love and forgiveness
