World champion Caster Semenya broke the 25-year old 800m African record over the weekend. The record was previously held by her idol, Mozambican Olympic champion, Maria Mutola who
at the 1993 African Championships in Durban 1:56.36. Caster broke the record at the 21st African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria in 1:56:06, earning her second gold medal in the championships.
This was preceded by her winning gold in the 400m event and breaking the 18-year-old national record previously held by Heide Seyerling.
