On this day in history, 28 June 1942, icon of the liberation struggle Martin Thembisile ‘Chris’ Hani was born.
Chris Hani was a well respected leader as Chief of Staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe which was the military wing of the ANC.
According to SA History Online, Chris Hani was born in the rural village of Sabalele, in the Cofimvaba region of the Transkei.
He was six of seven children to Gilbert and Mary Hani.
His tragic death was a result of assassination on 10 April 1993, outside his home in Dawn Park.
His assasinator CliverDerby – Lewis died in 2016 after repeatedly being denied parole. He was released on parole in 2015 after 22 years in prison due to Lung Cancer.
Co-assasinator, Janusz Walus, is still behind bars and was denied parole in 2017. According to News24 presiding judge Justice Minister Michael Masutha said he still showed lack of remorse for his actions.
