The glamorous life that celebrities live during the peak of their careers is something we can only dream of. But sometimes, this doesn’t end well.
BONA’s finance expert Samke Mhlongo says she was caught off-guard when a friend asked her if her finances matched her popularity. Here’s what she had to say:
At a catch-up with a friend a few weeks ago, I was asked a simple question that left me shook. “I see you are doing well; your social media activities say it all. But is your wealth growing the same rate as your personality?”
I felt like I had been run over by a bus a truck because the truth is, it isn’t. I am by no means claiming to be a celebrity, but I am part of a growing breed of entrepreneurs that earn a living off its talents and not skills only.
Financial author Gerald Mwandiambira says many celebrities do not cater for the short -term earning window of their careers, and do not realise that their earnings over 5 to 10 years needs to last them 30 to 40 years, which is the average life outside of the spotlight.
