1. If I Stay Right Here by Chwayita Ngamlana.
Once I started reading, I couldn’t put this book down. It is an emotive read that draws you into the complicated and toxic love affair between Shay, a seemingly innocent journalism student, and Sip, a former prisoner. The book explores lust, abuse, sex and money.
2. Reflecting Rogue: Inside the Mind of a Feminist by Professor Pumla Dineo Gqola.
As a young black woman, this book resonated deeply with me as it explores the struggles that we are facing in this country. The experimental, autobiographical essays critically reflect on sexism, racism, gender equality, politics and power. It a lesson-packed book that touches on some uncomfortable truths about the society we live in.

3. The Goddess of Mtwara and Other Stories: The Caine Prize for African Writing 2017.
I always look forward to the yearly collection of short stories because I get to discover unique techniques that reflect on Africa’s storytelling tradition. The short stories from African authors stretch your imagination to places that are scary, confusing and fascinating.
