Our Features Writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana visited the newly opened hotel, Onomo Hotel in Durban. She tells us about her stay in and what the hotel has to offer the already vibrant hotel industry.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
When I travel, I prefer to stay in hotels that are within proximity to the city centre and tourist attractions. I was pleased to see that this hotel is located near the International Convention Centre, North Beach, uShaka Marine World and the Moses Mabhida Stadium. On arrival, I was welcomed by a friendly guest relations officer who checked me in and directed me to my room.

THE ROOM
In order to get to my room, I had to use the staff elevator because the one for the guests was not working. I didn’t like that I had to squash in among staff members who were busy with their duties. The room was fairly sized with minimalistic décor in white, brown and black. The shower and toilet were behind stained-glass doors, and there were cupboards that divided the bedroom and the bathroom. The bed dominated the room, and I wish that there was a chair or couch to sit on. But, I loved that it was soundproof and had enough space to store my luggage. I also found it to be too simple and did not entice me to relax in it.
IN-HOUSE RESTAURANT
The cafeteria style restaurant has a comprehensive menu that offers traditional meals such as steak, curry and rice, burgers and many other meals. When I ordered my food, I told the waiter that I was going to eat in my room. When the food arrived, it was not covered and warm enough. When ordering the drinks, there was only one person behind the bar, so it took a long time for me to get service.
AMBIANCE
The check-in desk is in an open plan area that leads to a vibrant restaurant and bar with a pop of green and red coloured furniture and modern ceiling lights. After checking in, I didn’t like that I had to walk through the busy restaurant with my luggage, trying to avoid waiters with trays and patrons trying to find their tables. The atmosphere throughout the hotel was very jovial and vibrant.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE
I love that the hotel is located within walking distance to the beach where I spent most of my time. There were plenty of security personnel at night, and I felt safe enough to enjoy the city night views by the outdoor terrace. I believe that this hotel is ideal for business travellers because it has a business centre and meeting facilities; it’s not for travellers that want a luxurious stay.
