Being employed is a privilege not afforded by many, it is therefore important to keep things good at the office to avoid losing employment.
While we may be aware of the things that have potential to get us out of our organisation doors permanently, we may sometimes take them for granted, an ignorance that can have serious repercussions.
Even though most things that have potential to get us fired are obvious, others aren’t, others may be used as accessories to give our bosses a strong reason to termination employment.
Receiving gifts – accepting gifts with people or companies affiliated with your organisation might sound like no big deal, right? I
Accepting a gift doesn’t necessarily justify being dismissed. But McDonald warns if there’s a clear policy prohibiting employees receiving gifts and you’ve received training on the policy, it can be used as a reason to dismiss you.
Poorly Representing the Company – employees make companies, therefore a negative representation of your company gives a bad name to the organisation. “When you sign a job contract, you’re essentially signing up to represent the company for which you work, so it’s in your best interest to consider yourself as an ambassador of your employer in every situation,” shares Investopedia, a web based financial hub.
Putting Negative Thoughts in Writing – we sometimes think that emails that are created for us by companies when we join them belong to us, well that is not entirely the case. The above-mentioned hub states that as emails are properties of the organisation the company has a right to monitor what you are receiving and sending via the work account. If found sharing confidential company information through your work email that may lead to them firing you, and yes, they can access your emails without your permission.
Revealing Company Secrets – revealing details about company projects you’re working on is a serious offence and can get you in trouble at work with your bosses. That may also lead to you being shown the door by the big bosses as the thought of working with someone untrustworthy can be unbearable. What you also share on your social media about the company can also make its way to your bosses through other colleagues. s
Don’t Respect the Chain of Command – one of the worst things you can do in the workplace is to not respect the chain of command. Your boss is senior to you and should be afforded respect regardless of how you may feel for him or her. “When you’re emotionally intelligent, aware of your surroundings and know who the players are, you have a sense of what you should say when, and when you should keep your mouth shut,” says founder of Linda Farley founder of Farley Training, a San Antonio-based management coaching firm.
