Getting a promotion at work can take more than just working harder. Sometimes, you need to prove to your boss that you are capable of growth and maturity in your work. So be smart about it – you do not necessarily have to work longer hours in order to show that you’re good at what you do, all you have to do is make the best of the hours you have.
Ask for feedback
You may be loyal and dedicated to your work but lack a certain ingredient to your ethic, which could potentially take you from a junior to a senior position. The only problem could be that you don’t know that you’re doing anything wrong. Identify a senior in your company whom you feel you can trrust to give you honest feedback on your work – then improve. Positive word will spread about you and the improvement in your work will speak for itself.
Stick around
If you never stay more than two years at any given job, you may be forfeiting your opportunity to a job promotion because you never stay long enough to receive it. There will always be greener grass on the other side but you will find that the reward of staying and persevering will often heed greater results.
Have presence
Be present in meetings, show that you have ideas, talk about solutions to problems etc., creating a presence about you will make your employer sit up and notice you. You need not be forceful with your views but if you just show potential for growth and a great ability to conduct yourself, you will develop a strong sense of belief in your character from your boss, which could afford you bigger responsbilities in the job.
Be Professional and avoid office gossip
You will be amazed at how fast gossip can spread. Not just that, in fact, you will also be amazed at how the gossip may change as it spreads. If you are implicated in any negative gossip that makes its way to the boss, you might come across as disloyal and a risky investment. Keep it professional and refrain from divulging in the office scoop.
Find a mentor
Mentorships are great because they give you a chance to interact with somebody who has already faced some of the troubles that you go through and may be best equipped to advise you on the steps to take towards career success.
