“Sometimes I forget you’re black”; “Wow you are always on time”; “You speak so well, where did you go to school?”.
Some of us have heard these “innocent” phrases before. But what may seem like a harmless comment could have a major impact on the people directed at because of underlying racism. Here’s how to deal with subtle racism in the office.
1. Do not laugh or participate in racial jokes. Make others aware of how you feel when they say or do things that hurt you.

2. See it is an opportunity to educate them about you race. Subtly bringing into the conversation the importance of understanding where where people come from.
3. Suggest sensitivity and diversity training to your manager which may be beneficial to the office.
4. Know your rights and address the matter with the individual concerned.

5. If all else fails, you can file a formal complaint, However, only go this route if your softer approach didn’t work. Once there’s a formal complaint, it’s difficult to save relationships and you may be seen as a trouble maker.
8. Know the law, you can take legal action by contacting the Labour Court and the CCMA they offer free services. You can also contact The Human Rights Commission or The Association of Black Securities and Investment professionals, they also have good guidelines.
