Comedian Thapelo King Flat Mametja shares his excitement about performing at the upcoming Blacks Only Comedy Show. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana
Comedy gives me the freedom to express my opinions to an attentive audience. I love that I can address any issue without fearing what people will think or say. Sometimes I talk about controversial subjects that others may find offensive, but I still get laughs. This makes me love my job even more.
So far, I haven’t come across a crowd that did not laugh at my jokes. Instead, I come across individuals that do not laugh and, when I spot them, I look them in the eye and ask if they would like anything to eat or drink. This usually makes them smile.
I’m bringing my A game to the Blacks Only Comedy Show. When my comedy career started, I had dreams of performing in the show. This will be my second time performing, and I will use the opportunity to raise the bar very high. I feel honoured and excited to be a part of it.
My advice for upcoming comedians is to attend comedy shows. This will help them learn and get tips on how to perfect their performances. They also need to brand themselves and respect their craft.
Catch King Flat at the Blacks Only Comedy Show on 24 March at Emperors Palace.
